CDC reports drop in AIDS, gonorrhea, syphilis cases
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 2001 cumulative AIDS, gonorrhea, and syphilis cases in the United States are down from last year's levels. A total of 15,380 new AIDS cases were reported through the 23rd week of the year, down nearly 6% from last year's level of 16,292. Gonorrhea cases fell from 147,343 in 2000 to 126,614 this year, a drop of more than 14%. Reported syphilis cases dropped from 2,766 in 2000 to 2,286 in 2001, a decrease of about 17%.
